The Power of Mindfulness when Coping with a Terminal Illness

Meditation and mindfulness and other mind-body practices can help you live in the moment and learn to appreciate each new day that comes along. When dealing with a terminal illness, mindfulness can offer you great relief.

The present moment is really all we have - because yesterday is gone, and tomorrow has not yet happened.

Mind-body techniques like hypnosis and meditation are very powerful tools that you can use to cope with a terminal illness.

Research has shown that positive words, prayers and affirmations can even affect water crystals. This process is demonstrated beautifully in Dr. Masaru Emoto's book - The Hidden Messages in Water. Dr. Emoto found that when people prayed or used positive words, feelings and emotions that the water crystals responded by forming beautiful symmetrical shapes.

It just makes sense to think that this same effect can be demonstrated in the human body since the human body is over 60% water.

In other words, your positive thoughts, feelings and emotions have a direct impact on your healing.

Even though you may have a terminal condition, you can still practice mindfulness and express gratitude for those things you have been blessed with in life, including your body. Loving and accepting your body in the present moment is extremely powerful because your body is essentially your temple and you can express gratitude for how well your body has served you over the years.

Expressing this gratitude - even if parts of your body are not working quite right is very powerful. Just like those droplets of water respond in a positive fashion - so does your body.

The fact is that none of us comes into this life knowing what tomorrow will truly bring, and none of has an expiration date stamped on our body.

Practicing mindfulness can help you develop a profound understanding of the challenges you are now facing as you find the courage, inspiration, and determination to make something wonderful out of your life even in the most difficult of circumstances.

Relaxing deeply can help you love and accept yourself in the moment, which can help you feel more joy and more peace. Meditation and mindfulness can even help you deal with some of the damaging and hurtful emotions that come up with a terminal diagnosis, helping you cope with the diagnosis in a more positive manner.

Using the imagination for wellness is a form of regaining control, increasing your resilience and general well-being.

Those coping with a terminal illness are far from helpless in terms of influencing how things turn out. When you focus on the positive and take steps to relax and unwind, your body reflects this effort by being less stressed and less sensitive to pain.

In other words, relaxing deeply is not only good for your mind it is also good for the body.
