Happy Birthday, Scorpio! October 23-November 23

Happy Birthday, Scorpios!

The Sun heads into Scorpio, usually around October 23 where it stays until about November 23. When I first mentioned this date range in Virgo, people had some questions- and, of course, there was the “NASA Changed Your Sign!” rumours which... happen a lot, actually and are never true: first- NASA won’t change your sign, they work in astro nomy and not astrology. That’s the simplified version: but, this rumour goes around quite a bit. Enough so that most astrologers can point to articles they wrote decades ago debunking it. So, the next time someone tries to tell you that you’re not the sign you think they are- if you didn’t already see our debunk of this one: yeah, no, your sign does not change. However, when we get into the Sun being in a certain sign during certain date ranges- that does change a little, depending on the year. This refers to the transit Sun. As far as birthdays go- Scorpio decans are:

Decan 1: October 23rd to November 1st

Decan 2: November 2nd to November 11th

Decan 3: November 12th to 23rd

As far as bringing that up goes, well, there are a few stereotypes about Scorpios I am sure you’ve all heard, but, while yes, there’s lust at play here. It’s the Scorpio lust for the truth behind the mystery that I’m talking about. If there’s a secret, a misunderstanding, or even a lie, a Scorpio is very, very likely to find out about it.

Additionally, I got more emails and Facebook messages from Scorpios going, “There is NO WAY I am a Libra! There’s just no way!” which is completely understandable: these are two very different signs. Though they do have some similarities, I think anyone who’s solidly Scorpio or Libra would rather not admit. Matter of fact, originally, those two constellations were once one: Scorpius. Libra’s scales were the Scorpion’s claws. This is a point I often make both to Scorpios looking to better understand themselves, and to couples where one’s a Scorpio and one’s a Libra. Think about it a minute, from a more figurative approach- the symbolism there is beautiful. For that matter, you also have to understand if you’re working with the marriage of astronomy and myth: depending on where you are in the world, that constellation may not even be a Scorpion. In Hawaii for instance, it’s a God’s fish hook. In Indonesia, a swan or a tree. In China, it was believed to be the heart, belly (Called Room) and tail of the Azure Dragon. Frankly, I think most Scorpios would be cooler with being that one than a Libra- not that they have anything against Libras, but, they do love their mythological beasts.

Moving on- the legend behind Scorpio happens to also be one of my favorites, and it’s really a beautiful illustration about how wrong people get it when they’re thinking about the “secretive, sex driven, kinky Scorpio.” Of course, on the surface, you can say that of many Scorpios, and this is where you’d be making a big mistake because nothing about a Scorpio is “on the surface.” I’ll get to that in just a minute.

Before we talk about Scorpius, really briefly, you need to understand that Orion was a giant jerk. At this time, he’s actually a giant- a studly, beautiful, and arrogant giant that could walk on water. The stories get a little blurred: but one thing’s clear, he’s a hunter, but he’s not a very ethical one. He was also a rapist. However, being as he was a brilliant hunter, he becomes friends with Artemis- goddess of the hunt. One version of the story paints him as sort of this lovestruck goober, but her brother was like “NO! This guy’s not good enough!” and he tricks her into shooting him with an arrow.

Another, Artemis does the deed herself when he rapes one of her handmaidens; in another still yet, she just gets fed up with him bragging; and in both, she sets Scorpius on him. In another, he’s married to Eos, goddess of dawn and he runs his mouth about how easy she is- so, she sets Scorpius on him. Like I said, jerk.

But, the one we’re going into his how the Earth Mother had just about had it with enough of Orion’s crap. Remember, he was a jerk. Enter Gaia, mother of all creation, Mother Earth. One of the first Gods and Goddesses- in some telling, the second to emerge only after Chaos. Some say Eros and Chaos mated, and she was the result: but I tend to go with the one about her having created herself from the Chaos. (You’ve probably noticed, I’m kind of fond of symbolism like this.) This is not the one you want to anger. And when Orion starts to brag about murdering every animal in creation, yeah, she got a bit livid. In yet another version, he does this to Artemis and her mother- while she was THE Huntress, she was also protector over all animals: so, anyway you slice it, Orion peed in goddess’ cheerios, and as a result: Scorpius is sent to take him out. First lesson: do not pee in goddess’ cheerios. Always a bad idea.

Secondly: Scorpio, far from simply being the butt of one of the world’s longest running sex jokes- is seen as a weapon of several very powerful Goddesses. That isn’t the only story involving the basis for the sign: but, it’s the most prominently told. In any case, what ends up happening is, Orion remains so scared of The Scorpion that the two are placed at opposing ends of the sky- and the Scorpion’s Heart is Antares. A fixed star, if you’re going “That looks like Anti-Ares” you’re right. It is. But, whereas the Mars associated with Aries is more aggressive- this one’s a bit more subversive: in short- the difference between a Warrior and a War Strategist. The red binary is one of the brightest in the sky and is often associated with the Archangel Oriel. I could go into all of that a bit more- but we’d be here all day.

Natal Scorpios and Scorpio Rising people tend to be well known for being intense, determined types. They’re dogged individuals who won’t give up for anything- but, similarly to Taurus, the kicker is: getting them started. Unlike Taurus, who may have a tough go due to comfort zone issues- Scorpios tend to get so caught up in why they’re being asked to do something, or worse: feeling like someone else is demanding it of them. That’s why they have a harder time getting started- but if it happens to be their own thing? Good luck stopping them. You’ll need it. You may find a Leo wearing a crown due to that strong projection of authority- and you might find one of us Capricorns running things due to our primal ambition: usually, if there’s a Scorpio in the picture, he or she will be standing right behind them, hands on their shoulders, whispering in their ear and actually running things.

Scorpios are very well known for knowing exactly what they want- except so many think they don’t. I’ve never been sure that’s not deliberate because, at heart, they’re magicians and strategists just waiting for the right time to strike. You will rarely find anyone who is more observant of... pretty much everything.

The downside of Scorpio is that they seem so drawn to darker things. That can be an upshot, too- but, it also seems quite often: darker things are drawn to them, as well. This can lead to a lot of trauma which can cause the Scorpio pessimism many often see. Granted, if you get them to open up to you about that- it may seem so matter of fact, it’s unsettling: but make no mistake, again, those hurts run deep. I’ve seen a few optimistic Scorpios, however- and they’re truly a force to be reckoned with. When you’ve got a Scorpio who has healed: you also have when they get into the most powerful phase of creation and regeneration you’ve ever seen. True magicians in every sense of the word.

So, to sum this up- when the Sun goes into Scorpio, guess what you get to do if you’re not a Scorpio? Draw on all that tremendous power. The ability to strategize. Remember, all jokes aside- the big thing behind Scorpio is desire and fueling your ability to obtain that which you desire: your will. You might be feeling a bit more provocative, a bit more jealous and manipulative at times, too. The key thing behind all of this, though, is working with all of this energy to engage in healing and transformational activities that will take you to the next level, whatever you’re working on.
